The difference between optical and digital zoom

Most of the digital cameras available these days come with preloaded feature of digital and optical zoom. However these terms are confusing and an average customer finds it hard to differentiate between the two.
Optical zoom is very similar to the zoom lenses on the analog camera or the popularly known 35 mm camera. To use this function and enlarge the image you change the length of your lens to bring the object in your image closer to the camera. It is important to know here that the optical zoom doesn’t affect the quality of image that has been filmed or shot

However the digital zoom functions differently. It uses the image that has already been snapped and crops and then zooms into the cropped part. It is similar to the one that you have been using in your computers. Important point to know here is that it degrades the image quality considerably.
