The importance of links is hidden from no one. You need links to see yourself anywhere in the search engine rankings. Especially Google gives great importance to these links. More the number of relevant links more are your chances to get some traffic in the niche you are in.
It is not only the search engines for which you need links for, you also need links for popularity and traffic from different sites. This is actually more important because there are high chances that you might not make it to the first page of search engines and believe me 99% of the traffic ends on the first page itself.
Achieving first page search engine ranking is hard because of the sites that have spent thousands of dollars to be there. Also some of the spots are occupied by sites like Wikipedia which gets considerable amount of traffic because of its internal links. You might not be able to beat others at this and therefore it is important that you link to sites that come in your niche.
