There are several ways that you can achieve some traffic and I am sure that you must have heard of this as well. But what I am going to tell you is not how to get traffic but how to get some relevant traffic.

See the basic sources of quality traffic to a new site are search engines like Google and yahoo. These two search engines cover more than 96% of the search engine market. So what you basically is to grab hold of these search engines and get your sites higher in their rankings. This might take a month or two for a new site and almost instantly for older sites.

Now you want to focus on long tail keywords i.e. keywords that are in form of sentence. For example, you might find it hard to rate for the keyword Metallica lyrics while you might easily rate higher for a long tail keyword like Metallica the day that never comes lyrics. It is because the traditional web pages are not optimized for long tail keywords as they target wider audience.

You can select keywords that returns about 500- 600 searches per day and has a decent search history then optimize your site for that keyword. Once you are done with this you will find traffic flowing to your site at a steady rate.

Later on you can open similar sites in the same niche that are optimized for different keywords and just dominate the niche.
